Key highlights of the day: Preliminary round ends with crunch matches

Can you even grasp that this is the seventh day at the 25th IHF Women’s World Championship? No, we did not believe so, but it is true and the last main round berths are up for grabs, while other key matches, featuring one of the title favourites, are also scheduled.

Let’s take a look first on what happened yesterday, as 12 teams have progressed to the main round. In one of the most balanced matches until now, Germany edged a 25:24 win against Hungary to win their group and start the main round with four points. Group E was definitely the most balanced at Spain 2021, after the Czech Republic also sealed a main round berth with a narrow 24:23 win against neighbours Slovakia.

In Group H, hosts Spain made it three out of three with a win against Austria, but the main story was Argentina progressing from the preliminary round for the first time ever after their win against PR of China, 36:24.

One of the biggest surprises in the competition was Japan’s win against Croatia in Group G, 28:26, with Brazil also making it three out of three with a straightforward win against Paraguay.

Last, but not least, Denmark remained perfect in Group F, qualifying for the main round with three points, while Congo wrote history by proceeding to the main round.

It’s time for the next batch of games on Tuesday, as some powerhouses enter the fray. Sweden face the Netherlands in the battle of the top two attacks in the competition, while Uzbekistan and Puerto Rico face off for a main round berth in the Palacio de los Deportes de Torrevieja, on the last match day of Group D

In Group C, title favourites Norway will try and extend their winning streak against Romania, as Asian rivals Kazakhstan and the Islamic Republic of Iran fight for a main round berth. Norway have won 11 out of their last 13 matches against Romania, while Kazakhstan beat Iran in September, at the AHF Asian Women’s Handball Championship, 38:33.

The game which pits together RHF and Serbia also looks to be paramount for their future in the competition, with the winner starting the main round with four points, while Poland look to win against Cameroon to qualify for the main round in Group B

France are already qualified for the next round, winning their first two games and can enjoy a great start at Spain 2021 if they are to win against Montenegro in their last Group A game, while Slovenia and Angola are pitted together to try and secure a main round berth. The African side look set to be left out, needing a big win against the European side and some other results to go their way.

We take a short stroll through Group F now, and let’s talk a bit about the mighty Argentina, who are enjoying their best start ever at an IHF Women’s World Championship. They look pretty good and we took a sneak peek into how they built this team, with a short insight from the main actors from the team.

Austria were also portrayed as a feel-good story at Spain 2021, only for their campaign to go awry from the start. It took some bad luck, but they are still fighting until the end.

The stat-attack is back and after the first games of the third round of the group phase, Nathalie Hagman is still the top scorer with 24 goals, despite playing only two games until this point.
