11 goals from Moryto help Poland record winning start

For the first time since 2013, Poland started the IHF Men’s World Championship with a win, recording a 30:28 victory against Tunisia.

Right wing Arkadiusz Moryto had a game to remember, putting 11 goals past their opponents’ goalkeeper.

GROUP B
Tunisia vs Poland 28:30 (17:17)

There was little to separate the two sides between the game, despite underlying differences in their styles: Poland brought a strong, tall team, while Tunisia relied on speed and creativity.

But there was no clear winner after the first half, a pacy, uncompromising one, in which the two teams traded blows, with no less than four lead changes.

Riding on their superb left back, Mosbah Sanai, who scored seven goals out of eight shots in the first 30 minutes, Tunisia were cruising to a 13:9 lead after 18 minutes.

However, Poland bounced back and, interestingly enough, their leading scorer was another pacey player, left wing Arkadiusz Moryto, who inspired a 4:0 run that tied the game five minutes later at 13:13.

Despite the lead changing two times, the deadlock was still not broken at the break (17:17) and it was anyone’s game in the second half.

It was more of the same, with Moryto scoring Poland’s first three goals to take his tally to nine in the game.

But Tunisia always came back, hitting back with the same intensity – until they could not anymore.

As their aggressive approach wore them down and Sanai was nowhere to be seen in attack, a 5:1 run from Poland saw the balance tilted with 13 minutes to go the scoreboard read 26:22 in favour of Poland.

Yet, it was far from over. With Moryto out after a two-minute suspension, Tunisia clawed their way back, (27:28), with two minutes to go.

The comeback attempt failed, though, as Poland stood their ground. Goalkeeper Piotr Wyszomirski recorded his fourth save of the game and Moryto finished the game with 11 goals and one assist.

Ultimately, the Polish side prevailed 30:28, the first winning start at the IHF Men’s World Championship for Patryk Rombel’s side since 2013.

With 11 goals out of 11 attempts, a flawless performance that basically handed Poland the win, Moryto, the hummel Player of the Match, is now tied with Swedish left wing Hampus Wanne in the top goal scorer standings at Egypt 2021.

Poland are leading the group and could secure a main round berth on Sunday, provided they do not lose against Spain, while Tunisia now face a must-win game against Brazil.
