Busy summer weeks for the Brazilian Handball Federation

After celebrating their 41st anniversary in June, the Brazilian Handball Confederation (CBHb) have been busy at work, continuing their off-court activities.

Nunes returns to the men’s national team

On Tuesday, 4 August, the CBHb announced Washington Nunes as the new head coach of the men’s national team. After an eight-month absence, Nunes, who replaces the Spaniard Daniel Gordo, returns after celebrating ninth place at the 2019 IHF Men’s World Championship in Denmark and Germany – the best men’s championship result in the history of the federation. 

Nunes’ main goal is to secure a spot at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which will be staged from 23 July to 8 August 2021. The team will play the Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in Norway from 12 to 14 March 2021, facing Chile, Republic of Korea and hosts Norway. Having the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship in Egypt ahead of the qualification tournament, the Brazilians have a chance to compete at international level and prepare to secure one of the coveted spots for the Olympic Games.

By announcing Nunes as the new men’s national team head coach, the CBHb started a new Instagram Live campaign with six episodes, not only introducing the new coach but also talking about his plans and perspectives. This series also featured Marcio Magliano and Guerra Peixe, head coaches of the men’s beach national team, as well as women’s national team coach Jorge Duenas and the managers of CBHb’s in- and outdoor activities, Fernando Pacheco and Stanley Mackkenzie. 

The Instagram Live series can be watched on @CBHb. Already in June, the CBHb celebrated its 41st anniversary with the campaign “40 names, 20 lives” on their official account. Players, officials and referees who have made a large contribution to Brazilian handball shared their stories and experiences on the channel. 

Enter, Train, Exit

“Enter, Train, Exit” – these actions play a crucial part in the recently published booklet about the return to handball during the COVID-19 pandemic developed by the medical and physiotherapy department of the CBHb. From medical recommendations to reopening facilities and establishments, all guidance is accompanied by the appeal to the athletes to focus on training only in the return phase, decreasing the chance of virus transmission. 

Beach handball online 

In the beginning of August, the first online beach handball referee standardisation course took place. Within five days, six international referees taught different modules, focusing on issues such as the goalkeeper’s exit, the referee’s position during ‘Golden goal’ situations and during the shoot-out, and punishments for unsportsmanlike attitudes. 153 referees from 15 federations watched the online classes, which were aiming at standardising the beach handball refereeing national board. 

Historical election

Sunday, 16 August marked a historical event for the CBHb as elections were held to improve the representation of clubs and athletes at the CBHb. With a record high number of voters, four clubs and 16 athletes were elected: four active male and female handball players each, three active male and female beach handball players each and one inactive male and female handball player each. All of them will participate in the general meetings to contribute to the main strategic decisions of CBHb and have the right to vote at the next presidential election.
