Service of Dr Moustafa celebrated in Egypt

Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Ashraf Sobhy received International Handball Federation (IHF) President Dr Hassan Moustafa earlier this week to congratulate him on his imminent re-election as IHF President.

With no other candidates standing, Dr Moustafa is set to enter his sixth IHF presidential term at the XXXVIII Ordinary IHF Congress, which is taking place virtually (by video conference) on Saturday 6 November 2021.

In a speech reported by local media in Egypt, Dr Sobhy congratulated the Egyptian-born Moustafa on his worldwide service to handball as well as acting as an icon, ambassador and symbol of Egyptian sport globally.

“He is a great pride for Egyptian sports,” said Dr Sobhy. “He is also the best ambassador for Egyptian sports and he has great credit for the development of the game, both globally and in Egypt.”

Before joining the IHF, Dr Moustafa played for Egyptian club Al Ahly for 11 years, as well as working for 10 years as a coach and the club also honoured him this week (Wednesday) with a special ‘Al Ahly Golden Necklace’ with current chairman Mahmoud Al-Khatib telling local media that Moustafa is “…a person we can be proud of, and he deserves to be honoured for what he has achieved.”

After being elected at the XXVIII IHF Ordinary Congress in Estoril, Portugal (2000), President Moustafa was re-elected at the XXX Congress in El Gouna, Egypt (2004), XXXII Congress in Cairo, Egypt (2009), XXXIV Congress in Doha, Qatar (2013) and XXXVI Congress in Antalya, Turkey (2017).

26 November 2021 will mark the 21st anniversary of Dr Moustafa being elected IHF President for the first time, with Dr Moustafa the longest-serving president of the federation since its formation in 1946.
