Key highlights of the day: Main round spots up for grabs

Day 4 of the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship delivered eight dazzling games, as the 1000-goal mark was hit after only 24 games were played.

471 goals were scored yesterday, with the highlight of the day being Egypt’s commanding 38:19 win against North Macedonia, the worst defeat ever at the World Championship for the Macedonian side.

Seven teams clinched their main round berths, as Sweden, Egypt, Portugal and France are the only sides to maintain their perfect record at Egypt 2021.

Group H is much or less decided, with Belarus, the Russian Handball Federation Team and Slovenia earning their main round berths. The surprise of the day was the 31:25 win of the Russian Handball Federation Team against Slovenia, as Republic of Korea are out and will continue their campaign in the President’s Cup.

In his first experience as a national team coach, Velimir Petkovic implemented well-known methods for the Russian Handball Federation Team, through which he is trying to ease them back into the best of the best at Egypt 2021

Other main round berths will be up for grabs on Sunday, on day five of the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship, with Spain facing Poland in Group B in a crucial game for the future of the reigning European champions in the competition.

Both Argentina and Denmark will be looking to build on their wins in the first game, as they face Bahrain and DR Congo in Group D, with wins securing their safe passage to the next phase at Egypt 2021.

Croatia are still looking for their first win in Group C, while Germany take advantage of Cape Verde’s difficulties and proceed to the next round and Hungary eye their next two points against Uruguay in Group A.

Meanwhile, last season’s VELUX EHF Champions League top scorer, French left wing Hugo Descat, is enjoying his life at his first IHF Men’s World Championship, after scoring eight goals in his first two games.
