Handball to feature in International School Sport Federation lecture series

IHF Handball at School lecturer Dr Milan Petronijevic will feature in the online educational programme of the International School Sport Federation (ISF) on Monday 18 December, delivering a lecture focused on the basics of handball and relevant information for teachers on how to teach the sport in schools.

The lecture, ‘Introducing Handball to PE Lessons,’ is part of a big-picture project for the ISF, which presents different online courses for PE teachers around the world. The lecture will start at 18:00 CET on Monday 18 December and will follow the opening at 16:30 CET by Ben Holden, Chair of the ISF’s Physical Education Committee, who will present ‘Engaging Invasion Games Teaching.’

“As handball is a team game — ‘invasion game’ — that has a wide possibility for implementation as a curricular PE activity, they asked for our help and nomination of one expert,” says Dr Petronijevic.

“The aim of my lecture will be to give basic knowledge of handball and its different forms that may be implemented in curricular and extracurricular hours. The content of my presentation will include a basic methodological and didactical approach in teaching handball on the beginner and novice levels.”

The possibility for this collaboration with the ISF has arisen because of the IHF’s H@S programme, which was launched in 2011 with the goal of creating a strong link between the IHF, schools, and national federations in order to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for children. The motto of the H@S programme is “fun, passion and health,” and all projects under H@S are concentrated as such.

The IHF was one of the first international sports organisations to introduce such a concept, targeting the worldwide training and education of teachers as related to their sport.

Every year, H@S courses are organised around the world throughout the year. Information on how to participate can be found on the IHF website

Dr Petronijevic is a core member of the H@S working group, led by Chairwoman Dr Ilona Hapkova, and is widely recognised in handball through his work promoting handball for children and young people. Dr Petronijevic has a PhD in the field of Sports Science and works as assistant professor at the University of Belgrade in the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education. He has extensive experience as a handball coach and international lecturer, and has written and implemented many national development projects in close collaboration with public schools, handball clubs, local authorities and other relevant institutions.
