Youth Men
The 10th IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship in Croatia marks the second appearance for Saudi Arabia. They celebrated their premiere at North Macedonia 2019.Â
Four years ago, Egypt became the first non-European side to clinch the trophy at the IHF Men's Youth World Championship, with an excellent generation spearheaded by Abdelrahman Mohamed, Hassan Walid and Ahmed Hesham.
It was a flawless performance delivered by the African side, which qualified for every edition of the world handball flagship competition at this younger age category but had never finished higher than the fifth place in 2007 and 2011.
For the first time in history, an Argentina U18 national team won the South and Central American Men’s Youth Handball Championship that took place on home soil in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 2022.Â
Hungary have been establishing themselves as a true powerhouse in the younger age categories in both men's and women's handball, but they still have not won a medal yet at the IHF Men's Youth World Championship. Their best result was a fifth place at North Macedonia 2019, after finishing on the 10th place both in 2013 and 2015.
The last IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship marked the worst outcome in Sweden’s history in this competition. For the first time, they did not make it into the top 10, although they finished with a victory against Norway to grab rank eleven.Â
For Chile, it will be the sixth IHF Men's Youth World Championship in a row. After making their debut at Argentina 2011, the South American side have not missed any edition of the tournament, finishing between the 16th and 24th positions.
Austria's only participation in the IHF Men's Youth World Championship so far dates back to 2013, when they finished 16th in the tournament held in Hungary. After missing the next three editions of the event, they are now back at this level after a 10-year break and hope to do a good job at Croatia 2023.
After their debut at Tunisia 2009, Norway have missed only one edition of the IHF Men's Youth World Championship, as they failed to qualify for Argentina 2011. So now they are heading into their sixth tournament at this level – but so far, the European side have been unable to win any medals.
Since making their debut at the IHF Men's Youth World Championship in 2013, Japan have been constantly improving their status in the subsequent three editions they took part in. At Georgia 2017 and North Macedonia 2019, they even broke through into the top 10, ending up on the eighth place in 2017 and on the ninth place in 2019.
In their first two appearances at the IHF Men’s Youth World Championship, Iceland secured medals twice, the silver in 2009 and then the bronze in 2015, with a six-year hiatus between them sealing berths for the final tournament in the world handball flagship competition.
They will be at the start for the fourth consecutive edition after taking the 10th place in 2017 and the eighth place in 2019, but the Nordic side still has plenty to improve, as their performances have dropped over the last years.
