Slovenia and Qatar proceed - only one semi spot open in Nanjing

Seven of eight semi-finallists of both - boys’ and girls’ - competitions at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing are already confirmed after the second day of the preliminary round. Thanks to their clear 33:12 victory against Tunisia, the Slovenian boys are through to the semis as well as Qatar after they had beaten Tunisia on the first day in group B. Including Norway three boys’ semi-finallists are confirmed, the fourth one will be decided in the duel Brazil vs. Egypt on Friday.

All is set already in the girls’ competition, where Russia and Korea in group A and Sweden and Brazil in group B have already qualified for the semis. The preliminary round will also be completed on Friday.

Boys’ tournament:

Group B:

Slovenia - Tunisia 33:12 (18:4)

In their first match the boys from Slovenia had an easy-going evening against Tunisia. After losing their opener against Qatar by 23:26 on Wednesday, the African champions missed the semi-finals in a clear way and will compete for the positions 5/6 on Sunday and Monday either against Egypt or Brazil.

Led by top scorer Gal Marguc (ten goals) and backed by the eleven saves of goalkeeper Ziga Urbic, Slovenia had decided the one-sided encounter already after 23 minutes, when the result was double-figured for the first time at 13:3. Tunisia were far away from endangering the winner of the European Youth Olympic Festival and finally were beaten in an unexpected clear manner.

Right after the break the backlog increased to 15 goals at 4:19 and six minutes before the end it were already 20 goals at 10:30. Scoring only from one quarter of their attacks was much too less to finish the game in a closer way. On the other hand, Slovenia easily marched through with a superb scoring percentage of 73 percent. After this clear win the Slovenians only need a draw against Qatar on Friday to win the group.
