Nagy: “Brazil win means nothing if we lose next match”
15 Jul. 2016

Andras Nagy from Hungary spoke to IHF.info after their penalty win against current world champions, their first win ever against a team they have played twice in an IHF Beach Handball World Championship and twice in the World Games.
“I got a kiss from my girlfriend Dora at the end,” said Nagy when asked who he climbed into the tribunes to meet. “She congratulated us and I’m very happy now.”
The home crowd witnessed an epic match which saw Brazil take the first period 22:18 before Hungary came back strong winning the second period 22:12. The game went to penalties and Hungary won 7:6, to take the game 2-1.
Nagy himself missed a shot, but it was not surprising, considering the Brazilian goalkeeper is one of the best in the world and has a very specific tactic of closing down the onrushing attackers.
“It’s a very hard question,” said Nagy when asked about the technical skills required in beating the goalkeeper. “We tried some variation on our shots for that kind of goalkeeping - to get close to him, to keep a distance from him, but I was the only one who missed so maybe I chose the stupidest one ever (laughs).
“But my teammates did very, very well and I’m proud of my whole team.”
Despite beating the current world champions and unbeaten team before their match, Nagy knows that the result means little if they do not continue on their winning streak.
“This result means nothing if we don’t get four points in our next two games,” said Nagy in advance of their matches against Ukraine later today, and Qatar tomorrow. “We need two more wins to be in the best four of the world championship and to move onto the next step on this road.”
That next step is Ukraine who they face on Friday evening (18:10) and are a side who have progressed since they lost their opening match against USA.
“The longer they play, they better they play,” he said. “We don’t think it will be an easy match because they have a very, very young team but they are playing better.
“We have to be focused and we must win. We don’t care about how.”
