“We were angry”

Norway’s women continue to impress at Budapest 2016 and opened the fifth match day of action at the 2016 IHF Beach Handball World Championships this morning with a game against the hosts.

Martine Welfler was full of emotion after their dramatic 2-1 (6:13) (26:20) {5:2 SO] win.

“I don't even know what to say,” Welfler told IHF.info straight after their victory against Hungary in the Main Round.

“Hungary's a really good team and almost every time we meet them we lose if there's penalties so it's amazing – at the end we were just saying to our goalkeeper ‘we love you’, she’s amazing.

“We don't know how far we can go but if we want to go far we need to continue to do what we were doing in the second half.”

Norway lost to penalty shots in the group phase in a shock and Welfler admitted that the feeling the players had after that is motivation to perform for the rest of Budapest 2016.

“When we met Brazil yesterday we were pretty angry, angry after that defeat to Poland and even though we lost against them we played a pretty good match.

“I think we should keep that memory,” she continued. “We know we are a better team and can win on a really good day.”

Norway vs Hungary was the first match of the day today at 10:00hrs and Norway play their second game nearly 12 hours later, against Spain at 20:40 later tonight, so how does that affect the team’s preparation?

“It’s a long day, but we will just go to our hotel,” she said. “We will have some dinner, do some video analysis on Hungary. It’s pretty good we have what will feel like a day’s break but it’s good and the temperature will be better too.”

A nation used to female handball success, indoors; now the beach handball team is performing consistently well on the world stage and for Welfler, who plays her club handball for Njaard Haandball it is progressing step-by-step.

“A lot of people back in Norway don’t really know about beach handball so we are trying our best to promote it a little bit,” said the 24-year-old.

“We have a Facebook page where we promote it every day and put information about how people can watch the games and stuff.

“For us, it’s really important at home that newspapers and the media write about us so people there can get to see this amazing sport - I just love it so much.”
