Final – Brazil vs Croatia, 19:00 hrs (local time)
The current world champions and a record of four gold medals and one silver in the six tournaments to date highlight just how impressive the team from the spiritual home of the sand version of handball are.
Their overall record before Hungary 2016 was almost flawless, with 48 games played, resulting in just nine losses. 83 periods have been won and 28 lost, resulting in 1,947 points scored and 1,531 conceded.
However, at Budapest 2016 they have looked shaky at times and a number of times have been taken to penalty shots (Egypt, Ukraine, Qatar) one of which they lost, against the hosts Hungary in the main round.
Despite this small setback a strong semi-final victory over Qatar 2-0, with dangermen Nailson Amaral and Tiago Claudio put them back on course. A knee injury to Pedro Witzbiki is likely to put the big defender out for the final against a Croatian team who they beat 2-0 in the main round yesterday.
That game was a shootout between Gil Pirez and Tiago Claudio for Brazil (30 points) and Zvonimir Dikic and Josip Sandrik (24 points), but Pirez came good with two late strikes to seal the second period and back to winning ways. The first period was Claudio’s time as his two late strikes seal a come-from-behind win 21:20.
Amaral (53 points), third in the top-scorer chart, and Pirez (42) – both named in the 2014 All Star Team - are top scorers for Brazil, a team who Croatia have beaten twice in eight matches in a world championship.
Coach Davor Rokavec will be looking to add to that record and to seek revenge for their runners-up spot against the Brazilians at the 2014 championship.
Croatia won the beach handball world championship back in 2008 and should the 2016 edition go to penalties, they are well experienced. Their first five games at Budapest 2016 went to the shots and they won them all.
Entering the main round known as the penalty specialists, they proved everyone wrong with an impressive 2-0 win over Ukraine where they scored 30 points in the second period.
Another penalty shootout saw them beat the hosts in a lengthy shootout, eventually winning 11:10. Ivan Juric and Josip Sandrik both scored 10 in that game, Zvonimir Dikic remains their main threat, scoring 51 points to date and topping the goalscoring charts.
Croatia as a team top the scoring with 429 points to date and as goalkeeper Luka Bumbak said to IHF.info, “it’s time to beat Brazil.”
3/4 (Bronze) Placement Match – Qatar vs Hungary, 17:00 hrs (local time)
While both teams will be disappointed to not be in the final, there is still a medal to play for.
In 2014 Qatar finished third so will want to at least equal that in 2016, while Hungary, who finished with a silver in 2010, can be happy with a top-four finish after not qualifying for the previous two.
Hungary and Qatar have only met once in a world championship match – and that was yesterday. Hungary won the match 7:6 on a shootout but today will be a totally different prospect.
Anis Zouaoui is their clear threat, scoring 12 points yesterday and has scored the most goals at Budapest 2016 to date (61), and is set to be named the tournament top-scorer as he lays just one point (114) behind current table-topper Ihor Kopyshynskyi (115).
Andras John from Hungary is fourth in the table with 52 strikes and 99 points, he also scored 12 points in the Qatar game as Hungary coach Istvan Gulyas looks for his side to give the home fans something to celebrate and his players something to wear around their necks.
