Egyptian enthusiasm after unexpected victory

After a very exciting match the Egyptian team won unexpectedly against Portugal with 30:29 and qualified for the quarterfinal whereas the Portuguese youngsters have to play for the places 9 to 16. After a real good preliminary round, Portugal were already counted as one of the favorites for the eight-final against Egypt. And during the first half they underlined their claim to the victory. Portugal was the better team and was leading 16:11 after 27 minutes. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. But during the second half, things changed. It started to become a very tight match with Portugal still in lead until the 58th minute, when Mohamed Hisham al Basiouny scored the 28:28 draw. He also was responsible for the goal to the first lead of Egypt (29:28). In the end Egypt won that tight match and will now play against Slovenia in the quarterfinal. Best scorers of this really thrilling eight-final were Mohamed Hisham al Basiouny for the Egypt team and Joao Ramos for Portugal, who both scored seven times.

18.00: Sweden – Russia 40:39, 34:34 (16:17)

Sweden win against Russia – Mattias Zakrisson makes the difference

After 60 minutes normal match time and ten minutes extra time a very tight eight-final between Sweden and Russia ended up with a 40:39 victory for the Scandinavians. Another Scandinavian team is awaiting Sweden in the quarter-final, as the lucky winner of today is going to play against the winner of the eight-final between Denmark and Norway. Poor Russia is going to the placement round, even though they never were behind during the entire 60 minutes of the match. Twelve seconds before the end of the normal playing time Mattias Zakrisson scored for Sweden to a 34:34 draw. But during the extra time things became even more dramatic. The lead changed constantly, and one second before the end of the first extra time Mattias Zakrisson scored again for Sweden. It was the goal that opened the door for the quarter-final with a 40:39. The decisive player Zakrisson was also the best Swedish scorer (eleven goals). The best Russian scorer was Sergej Zhedik (eleven goals).

Placement matches 17-20

18.00: Serbia – Argentina 32:27 (19:14)

Serbia wins – but does not convince

In the first game of the placement round for the places 17 to 20 Serbia won against Argentina with 32:27. After a disappointing preliminary round the Serbian team came to its second success during this Junior World Championship and will play tomorrow, 25 July 2011, for the places 17 and 18 against the winner of the match between Korea and Hungary while Argentina will compete against the looser (places 19 and 20). During the first half Serbia was the better team but without showing a convincing performance. Nevertheless they made it to a 19:14 lead. In the second half Serbia controlled the game. Argentina tried hard to come closer but in the end it was a clear victory for Serbia. Best scorer of this match was Ognjen Jokic (Serbia), who made 13 goals.Â
