Denmark, Hungary, Sweden and Russia on their way to the quarter-final -Summary of match day 3

Group A
Angola – Denmark 15:25 (6:16)

Second match, second win. With its 25:15 win against Angola, the Danish team took an important step towards entering the quarter-final. This convincing success was due to a strong defensive performance of the Scandinavian team during the first half. The African girls, who had won against Germany 23:22 the day before, scored only six times in the first half. While Denmark has almost reached the quarter-final, Angola still needs two wins in the upcoming two games against Argentina and the Netherlands. Best scorer of the Danish women was Burgaard Louise (eight goals). Ngalula Kanka scored seven times for Angola.

Group B
Japan – Norway 28:34 (8:12)

The first appearance of the Norwegians at this WCh also brought the first two points for the Scandinavians. They won their first Preliminary Round match against Japan 34:28 (12:8) and lead the ranking of Group B which consists of only four teams after the cancellation of the Ivory Coast. Best scorer of the Norwegians was Hege Wahlquist, who marked seven goals. The best scorer of the match was, however, the Japanese Runa Hayashi, who scored eight goals.

Group C
Hungary – Kazakhstan 42:16 (19:7)

Only 24 hours after their first WCh match, the team of Hungary has achieved their second success, winning their postponed match against Kazakhstan 42:16 (19:7). As in their first match against France, the selection of Kazakhstan didn’t have the slightest chance and made it to a 7:19 after 30 minutes. In the second half, things didn´t change. The Hungarian team, whose best scorers were L. Takacs and S. Planeta (both seven goals), was vastly superior, so that Kazakhstan could do nothing but react. The Hungarians now seem well prepared for the two decisive matches in Group C against Sweden and France. Kazakhstan will play against the selection of DR Congo tomorrow.

Sweden – France 31:18 (13:11)
In the second match of Group C, Sweden caused quite a stir. The Swedish team defeated the favored team from France 31:18. In the first half, the match was balanced and the lead changed several times. Sweden had the better start to the second half, which influenced the further course of the match. The Scandinavians, whose player Lina Larsson (7 goals) was not only the best scorer, but also the most compelling player of the match, quickly made it to 17:11, then from 19:16 to 30:17. France probably still needs two victories in the two remaining matches against DR Congo and Hungary. Sweden leads the ranking with 4-0 points ahead of Hungary (also 4-0 points) and has the best chance to qualify for the quarter-final.

Group D
Brazil – Russia 24:34 (12:14)

The Russian team, one of the favorites to win the World Championship title, stays on the road to success. The second appearance at this WCh was brilliant: Russia beat the team of Brazil 34:24 (14:12) and was the well-deserved winner. In the first half, the South Americans achieved to play an open match. But after the break, the Russian team dominated the opponent, defended brilliantly and scored several easy goals. The Brazilians did their best to fight back, but at the end they had to admit defeat to the superior Russian team which is without a lost point after two matches. For Brazil this defeat, however, doesn’t mean the end of all WCh dreams yet.
