The second day of competition in the men’s and women’s beach handball competitions at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina saw decisions at both ends of the preliminary groups made.

Benedok TOTH (HUN) – pivot

On playing beach handball at an Olympic Games:
"When I started playing beach handball, I just thought, you know, it’s a cool sport, the music is playing, we are on the beach, so I felt really happy and I could enjoy the game.

"Until my first European championship I didn’t think about it too much, but then I was brave enough to dream big, and now we are here with a little bit of luck, and we will do anything we can - it feels amazing to step on Olympic sand."

Joao GONCALVES (POR) – goalkeeper:

On beating Italy in their important preliminary round clash:
"I’m feeling exhausted, but super happy. It was all-or-nothing this game, we will give everything we have in our souls to go through to the semi-finals."

Jasmine Leata LIU (ASA) – winger:

On beach handball in her home country:
"In American Samoa we don’t have a lot of opportunities to play lots of teams because our country is very small. We knew all the teams here have many opportunities to compete against other nations and the players themselves against other clubs."

On the importance of sharing cultures at an Olympic Games:
"It’s really important to us, not everybody knows about Samoans and to be able to share with everybody else here, we need to let everybody know we are Samoans and there is American Samoa too – not everybody knows about us and we’re here to represent American Samoa."

On representing not only his country, but the African continent in beach handball at an Olympic Games:
"When I started playing beach handball I didn’t believe I could be at an Olympic Games [but I am] right here, right now, and this is why it is very amazing and why it is such a great experience.

"I am very proud of representing my country and at the same time the continent of Africa."
