Day of decision

The preliminary round of beach handball at the Youth Olympic Games finishes today with all 24 men’s and women’s teams playing their fifth and final game of the first stage.

Matchday 3: Men’s Preliminary Round – Wednesday 10 October

- Argentina and Hungary look to make it five wins out of five in their respective groups
- Italy and Portugal on equal points in joint third, hoping to progress from group B
- Group A has same equation, with Thailand and Venezuela on same points in third and fourth
- Uruguay and Paraguay hoping for first points

Men’s Preliminary Round: Group A
Venezuela face Spain and Thailand take on Chinese Taipei as both teams know only a win will do today if they want to give themselves the best chance of qualifying through to the main round. 

Both Venezuela and Thailand are on four points each, with the South Americans currently outside of the qualification place on periods difference. However, if the teams end on the same points today, Thailand would go through on the head-to-head record after they beat Venezuela on matchday one.

Hungary play Uruguay in the top versus bottom clash with the Hungarians looking to make it five wins out of five and go through to the main round as the number one team.

Men’s Preliminary Round: Group B
Italy will do everything they can to beat Argentina today and hope that Portugal slip up against bottom team Paraguay, who have won just one period so far at Buenos Aires 2018.

With the Portuguese sitting on the same points as Italy, they lead in the group, thanks to a better total period difference (+2), but if they were to end on the same points today, Portugal would progress after they beat Italy in their clash yesterday and, therefore, win the head-to-head record.

Mauritius play Croatia in the third match of the group later with the Mauritians buoyed be a fantastic day of play yesterday which resulted in their first-ever win, and taking the host nation to a shoot-out.
