Men’s Main Round: Day 2
A day of intrigue, waiting, stress, ultimate joy - and ultimate sadness - the final day of the men's main round beach handball competition at Buenos Aires 2018 saw only Spain confirm their place early one, beating their Iberian neighbours Portugal in the tightest of matches, with just one point separating each period and then a shoot-out being won by just three.

This meant that the Portuguese, along with Thailand, Croatia and Hungary were all awaiting their fate with Croatia seemingly out of contention and Thailand in control, after they beat their European rivals 2:0. However, with a number of criteria at stake, the final match of the main round would decide five of the six group positions as Hungary took on Argentina.

A Hungarian win would send out Portugal and Croatia, but a home win would see Hungary, along with Thailand, exit.

While Argentina easily won the first period by an impressive 11 points as they showed a standing-room only crowd that they meant business, the second period was a tight affair which went right down to the wire - with Viktor Menicsuk missing a one-pointer at the end for Hungary.

The golden goal period then followed. Argentina won the ball from the re-start against the 2,05m-tall Hungary pivot Benedek Toth, and Nicolas Dieguez managed to sink home moments later to ensure an eruption of Argentina emotion and equivalent happiness and sadness for the four other watching teams.
