Successful Balkan teams: Croatia and Serbia win first placement matches

Placement 11/12:
Croatia – Brazil 35:26 (13:8)
Thanks to a strong second half Croatia has won the placement match after three defeats in the Main Round. Match winners for the Europeans were goalkeeper Marta Zderic with the outstanding number of 21 saves and top scorer Katarina Jezic (nine goals). The Croats really overran the South American Champion in the starting phase. It took only 14 minutes, as Croatia was in lead with 10:1, before Brazil improved and reduced the gap to five goals at the break.  But as the Croatian defense including goalkeeper Zderic stood really strong the Croats went away to 23:16 and decided the game right afterwards with the intermediate score of 27:16 in minute 46 – and kept this eleven goals distance until the end. Top scorer for Brazil was Karolina Souza with eight goals. After rank six two years ago Croatia missed the “top ten”, but has a young team that will play together for two more years. Brazil, too, decreased in the final ranking after rank nine 2008 in Macedonia.

Placement match 9/10:
Serbia – Spain 32:26 (17:13)
Successful end for Serbia, third consecutive defeat for Spain: In the European duel for the places 9 and 10 the Balkan team took a well-deserved victory. The game was equal until the score of 9:9, before the Serbs scored a 5:0 series. Even as Spain came closer to 20:18 after the break the Serbian victory wasn’t really endangered.  The placement match was decided at the score of 30:22 for Serbia in minute 55, though Spain reduced the distance to the end and Marta Lopez (eight) and Ana Martinez (seven) scored more than the half of the Spanish goals. Serbian top scorer was Zeljka Nikolic with seven goals. After Spain had reached the fourth place in 2008 this was a clear step downwards, even as they were the only team that had beaten semi finalist Montenegro up to now. After missing the WCH in 2008 Serbia showed some strong performances and again is among the “Top 10” of the Junior’s World.
