Korea win President’s Cup final

Thanks to a close 26:23 victory against Egypt, Korea raised the trophy of the President’s Cup. Algeria won then 15/16 placement match.

 

Placement Match 13/14:

Egypt – Korea 23:26 (11:12)

The Korean team is the successor of Spain as winner of the President’s Cup at the Men’s World Championship after finishing 12th at the WCh in 2009 in Croatia before. The seven goals of Jung Park decided this game of two continents. The first half was a roller coaster as the lead changed constantly – but in the end equal with as close lead for the Egyptians. The second half was absolutely equal until the 17:17, before Korea first extended the lead to 20:18 and 22:19 in minute 53. Then the game had been decided even as Egypt was able to keep the gap.

 

Placement Match 15/16:

Japan – Algeria 24:29 (13:13)

By winning this placement match Algeria took their best ever WCh result since 1999, when they also finished 15th. Against Japan the Northern Africans took the lead very early and were away 9:5 before the Asian found their rhythm and turned the match at the 13:12. Right after the break Algeria extended the lead to 21:16, before the Japanese had their last chance to turn the game at the score of 22:23. A late series of 6:1 goals to 29:23 then decided the game for the Algerians. Top scorers were Keido (six goals for Japan) and Zouahoui (eight goals for Algeria).
