Medicine of Champions, Evolving Medicine

The International Congress, Medicine of Handball was held for the second time in conjunction with the IHF Men’s World Championship, with great success. The event first took place at the 24th IHF Men’s World Championship in 2015 in Doha, organised by the world’s leading specialised orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital, Aspetar.

In 2017 the Congress, named ‘Medicine of Champions, evolving medicine’, was once again organised by Aspetar in partnership with the International Handball Federation and the French Handball Federation, and focused on how sports medicine has followed the development of handball athletes as they become taller, faster and stronger.

The Congress offered an opportunity for sports medicine professionals from all over the world to compare practices, exchange views and observe results, and took place at the French National Olympic and Sports Committee in Paris.

“I am very proud to organise this medical conference, with the International Handball Federation and the French Handball Federation, about handball medicine,” said Dr Philippe Landreau, Chief of Surgery at Aspetar. “It’s a sort of continuity with something we started two years ago in Doha. We organised a conference during the World Championship and we did the same thing this time, with the two Federations supporting the Congress a lot – the IHF and the FFH. The topics are very practical – we talk about injuries, medicine on the field, recovery, prevention, treatment.”

The full programme for the Congress, which was held over two days on the 20th and 21st of January, can be viewed on the official website for the event.
