China and Tunisia in the final of the President’s Cup

China and Tunisia fight for the first trophy to be handed over at the Women’s World Championship in Serbia. On Monday (16 December) this intercontinental encounter will be the final of the President’s Cup after both started victorious in this placement stage. Tunisia can take revenge for the President’s Cup final in 2011, when they lost against Germany.

D.R. Congo vs. China 22:23 (8:11)

China were the stronger team but only for ten minutes in the first half. After a good start of D.R. Congo the Asians woke up. After 20 minutes they took the lead and the 11:8 was the logical halftime result of the concentrated performance of the team of head coach Xindong Wang during the last 10 minutes before the buzzer.

D.R. Congo found back into the match thanks to a higher scoring percentage and their team spirit. Right before the end, the Africans were awarded for their enthusiastic performance in the second half by the 22:22 draw. But with the final second, China scored the winning goal by Shengwen Sha. It was the first and only goal for the 23 year old pivot from Shanghai and a lucky punch for the Asians.

Top scorer for China was Jiaquin Zhao (seven goals). The best shooter of D.R. Congo was Clemence Matutu Luwemba, best left wing at the French league between 2009 and 2013, by six goals. So China reached ever the final of the President’s Cup for the first time.

Statements after the match:
Xindong Wang (coach China): I’m satisfied with the result. I’m not so satisfied with the performance of my team especially in the second half. We made too many unforced errors. But we have a young team and it is allowed basically to make mistakes. It's a process of learning here and for that reason the match was a new lesson for us. Finally I have to congratulate D.R. Congo for their tough match.

Celestin Mpoua (coach D.R. Congo): We are here to learn. And today we learned a lot. I’m proud of my team and I must say that the defeat today was really unlucky. We fought back after the break and in my opinion we played on eye level in the last 15 minutes. But it was only a match. Now we will focus on the last match and then we will see what is possible in January at the Africa Cup.

Argentina vs. Tunisia 21:27 (12:14)

It was anything but an easy way for Tunisia to reach the final of the Presidents Cup. The resistance of the Argentinean was very high from the beginning on. The Tunisian team had to work hard to get a 14:12 lead after the first 30 minutes. And the match continued on the same way the next 15 minutes. It was the short time between minutes 45 and 50, when the match was decided. Argentina paid tribute for their intensively fight before and Tunisia scored goal by goal. Finally the result was a little bit too high but deserved.

Statements after the match:

Paulo Jorge de Moura Pereira (coach Tunisia): We are happy. We had a lot of problems during the preparation for the tournament. Now we can reach the best result ever for a Tunisian team. I’m looking forward to the match against China.

Eduardo Peruchena (coach Argentina): Congratulation to Tunisia. We played well most of the match but in the middle of second half we lost our structure and made mistakes. This was the key that Tunisia finally won clearly.
