Millions gripped by handball drama

When Norway faced Germany in the Eighth-Final on Sunday 13 December, over half the people in Norway watching television were looking at Heidi Loke and her friends win by six goals to make it through to the Denmark 2015 Quarter-Finals.

TV2 Norway had record ratings for that match as in the final minutes 1.45 million people tuned in to watch, meaning 55% of those watching TV at that time were watching the action from Frederikshavn.

On the same night, over the Norwegian borders into Denmark and Sweden, over two million people were watching the Scandinavian duel between hosts Denmark and the unbeaten Swedish side.

The 1.75 million watching in Denmark on TV2 went to bed happy to see their side progress, winning by eight goals but the 434,000 in Sweden watching it on Kanal 5 went to bed disappointed – it was the top programme in the key 21.00-22.00 viewing period.

As the host nation progressed to the Quarter-Finals, they faced the mighty Romania and eventually lost after the first period of overtime as more and more fans tuned in to watch the drama live on TV2 Denmark – including the entire Norwegian team who watched the game on court in Kolding.

The first half of Denmark vs Romania saw 1.54 million watching, then that grew to 1.8 million in the second half and by the time the second half of the first period of overtime had started, nearly two million (1.93 million) Danes were glued in front of their TV sets.

Unfortunately they did not see a win for the team in red and white, but those in Romania watching on Dolce Sport were part of the near-1-in-10 (9%) people in Romania watching that second half of extra time.

As the final weekend approaches, handball fans across the world who cannot be in Herning and those particularly in Poland, Romania, Norway and Netherlands will be watching on television to see the world’s best players go for gold, silver and bronze.
