Beach handball ready to open 2023 South American Beach Games

The fifth edition of the South American Beach Games gets underway on Friday 14 July in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Featuring both men’s and women’s beach handball competitions which take place from 14 to 17 July, the Games will welcome 829 athletes from 14 countries competing in 14 sports. Events will be held at six locations across the city, with the Games wrapping up with a closing ceremony on Friday 21 July.

The beach handball competitions will be held at the El Rodadero Multisport Park, with Argentina (ARG), Brazil (BRA), Chile (CHI), Colombia (COL), Ecuador (ECU), Paraguay (PAR), Peru (PER), Uruguay (URU) and Venezuela (VEN) all represented.

In the men’s competition, nine teams will play 22 games, starting with a preliminary group stage featuring one group of five and one group of four teams. The top two in each will then go through to the semi-finals.

The women’s competition featured seven teams split across two groups, with 14 games played in the same format as the men’s competition.

The current title-holders are Argentina's women and Brazil’s men after both their finals back at Rosario 2019.  Brazil’s men beat Uruguay 2-1 (24:10, 10:16, SO 6:4), while Argentina’s women, less than six months after their 2018 Youth Olympic Games gold medal, overcame Brazil 2-1 (15:14, 13:16, SO 7:6).
