IHF Trophy Africa – Zones II and V open with exciting matches

The Men’s IHF Trophy Africa – Zones II and V opened on Tuesday with 12 matches in total – six in Zone II in Conakry, Guinea, and just as many in Zone V in Nairobi, Kenya.

In Group A of the youth (U18) event in Conakry, Sierra Leone beat Mali 38:31, while Cape Verde proved too strong for Guinea Bissau (44:30). In Group B, home side Guinea also made the first step towards the semi-final, beating Gambia 50:8.

On Wednesday, Sierra Leone meet Cape Verde at 10:00, Guinea Bissau face Mali at 14:00, and Senegal open their campaign with a match against Gambia at 18:00.

Hosts Gambia also claimed an opening win at the junior (U20) competition, comfortably beating Guinea Bissau 67:14. In Group A, Mali also snatched a hard-fought 34:32 victory against Gambia and in Group B, Cape Verde beat Sierra Leone 41:22. 

On day two, Gambia face Guinea at 12:00 local time, Guinea Bissau face Mali at 16:00, and Senegal take on Sierra Leone at 20:00.

Unlike Guinea, the hosts of Zone V (Kenya) showed mixed results on the opening day. In the youth tournament, they took a big win against Djibouti, 59:11. In Group B, Ethiopia also beat South Sudan, 71:14. In Group A, the match between Burundi and Rwanda was very exciting, with Burundi claiming a 45:44 victory.

On day two, Burundi play Uganda at 10:00, followed by South Sudan vs Kenya (12:00) and Djibouti vs Ethiopia (14:00).
