2022 Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship ready to throw off

11 Asian national teams are ready to throw off the 2022 AHF Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship, which will take place in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, from 20 to 31 August. The matches will take place at Bahrain Handball Federation Hall.

This is the ninth edition of the tournament, which has been organised by the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) since 2005. Bahrain won the two most recent events, in 2016 and 2018, before the tournament in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, Bahrain will try to defend their title at home. They were drawn into Group A alongside Islamic Republic of Iran, India, Republic of Korea and Uzbekistan. While this group features five teams, another six participants will play in Group B – Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Kuwait.

After the preliminary round, the two best teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, while the teams ranked third and fourth will head to the 5-8 Placement Matches. Besides, the fifth-placed sides will face off in the 9-10 Placement Match, while the team ranked sixth in Group B will seal the 11th position.

Manama hosts the tournament for the third time in history after 2012 (when Qatar won the title) and 2016 (when Bahrain claimed their maiden trophy). Similar to Bahrain, the teams of Qatar and Republic of Korea won the competition twice in the past, while Iran and Kuwait triumphed once.

The top five teams from the event will directly qualify for the 2023 IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship, which will be held in Croatia in 2023.
