Venezuela and Colombia earn South American zone titles

The South American zone youth and junior tournaments of the Women's IHF Trophy South and Central America took place in Lima, Peru, from 6 to 10 June 2023. The matches of both events were held at Polideportivo 1, Villa Deportiva Nacional.

The top two participants in each age category – youth teams of Venezuela and Colombia and junior teams of Colombia and Peru – secured their berths at the Continental Phase of the IHF Trophy South and Central America.

The youth (U17) competition featured four teams, and after the preliminary stage, the two best sides met in the final on Saturday. Venezuela proved too strong for Colombia (31:22), to claim the title. The day before, Peru secured bronze, winning the third-place encounter against Bolivia 52:5.

At the junior (U19) event, the winner was determined directly following a round-robin competition. On Friday, Colombia defeated Venezuela 30:24, and Ecuador beat Bolivia 25:3. And on Saturday, Colombia took a commanding win against Bolivia (55:10), while Peru defeated Ecuador (50:13).

So Colombia won the title, earning the maximum of eight points in four games, while Peru finished second with six points. Venezuela (four points) ranked third, followed by Ecuador (two) and Bolivia (zero).
