Guinea ready for women’s youth continental championship

The African Handball Confederation (CAHB) Women’s Youth African Championship will get underway on Sunday, with the best U18 teams from around Africa taking to the court in Conakry, Guinea.

The event, taking place from 27 February to 6 March, follows the junior edition, which ends today with hosts Guinea playing Tunisia for bronze and Angola taking on Egypt for gold. Both championships have been rearranged from 2021 after their postponement due to COVID-19.

Six teams have registered for the youth edition with Egypt, Algeria and Guinea will compete alongside championship debutants Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Gambia.

The last edition of the championship took place in Niamey, Niger in 2019, with Egypt crowned champions, winning their third championship in a row after 2015 and 2017. This year, the young Egypt side have been preparing in Poland alongside the junior team, playing local club sides, with a number of the youth team players stepping up to the junior squad in Guinea.

The tournament acts as qualification event for the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship, which will be played in Georgia from 3 to 14 August. The top three teams in Guinea will automatically book their tickets through.

All matches from Guinea are being streamed live by KabackTV and for more information, visit the official Facebook page of the Handball Federation of Guinea.
