Germany through to main round after clear win over Uruguay
28 Nov. 2025
Co-hosts Germany earned their second straight win at Germany/Netherlands 2025, this time against Uruguay, and secured their main round berth. In turn, Uruguay are yet to claim their first points at the tournament, and the South Americans need to beat Iceland in their last group match in order to progress to the main round.

Uruguay vs Germany 12:38 (7:15)
Sabrina Grieco opened the scoring for Uruguay, but it was the South American team’s only lead during the entire match. Cheered by their home crowd, Germany did not concede a single goal for almost the next 10 minutes, enjoying a 5:0 run.
Uruguay did not throw in the white flag and scored three unanswered goals in the following three minutes to cut the gap to just one goal, punishing the European side for their mistakes. However, Germany were soon back on track, as they tightened their defence to produce another 5:0 run.
The European side played without one of their leaders, Emily Vogel, sidelined due to injury problems. Nieke Kühne made an impact in Germany’s attack, and so did Nina Engel. Uruguay were restricted to seven goals in the first half, and the co-hosts felt quite comfortable, leading 15:7 at half-time.
In the second half, Germany continued to extend the gap. Uruguay’s goalkeeping duo combined for just one save throughout the game, so the Europeans boasted an 88% shot efficiency. In contrast, Katharina Filter, who replaced Sara Wachter in Germany’s goal towards the end of the encounter, saved six of seven shots.
As Germany rotated their squad, 13 of their 14 court players netted at least once, with hummel Player of the Match Kühne and Engel scoring seven times each, and Antje Döll adding six more. Uruguay scored just five goals after the break, so the Germans ultimately cruised to a 26-goal victory, 38:12, securing their place in the main round, with a four-point lead over Uruguay, with only two points in play for the South American team.
