Georgia’s youth team claim second straight win in San Jose

The Men’s IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase in San Jose, Costa Rica, continued on Wednesday 8 March with four matches in the youth and junior age categories.

Georgia’s youth (U18) team is the only participant in the entire event to have claimed two wins in two encounters. After beating Nicaragua on the opening day (43:27), the Georgians defeated Tahiti – notably, by 16 goals (36:20).

In the other match of the youth competition, Nigeria proved too strong for Nicaragua (46:30), while Guadeloupe had a rest day. Georgia lead the race with four points after two matches, Guadeloupe and Nigeria are both on two points after one match, while Tahiti and Nicaragua are yet to take their maiden points.

On Thursday, Nigeria meet Guadeloupe at 13:00 (local time) and Tahiti face Nicaragua at 17:00. Georgia have a rest day. 

At the junior (U20) event, Cuba bounced back from their opening defeat against Guinea as they took a commanding win against Australia (44:16). Great Britain successfully entered the tournament, beating Guinea 32:26. At the same time, home side Costa Rica enjoyed a day off.

Cuba, Great Britain, Guinea and Costa Rica all have two points after two competition days, while Australia have lost both their encounters. On Thursday, the Australians meet Guinea at 15:00, and four hours later Great Britain play Costa Rica. Cuba have a rest day.
