Surprise, respect and achievement â Faroese handball celebrated by stamp set
01 May. 2025

Following on from the commemorative set of postal stamps issued in Croatia in recognition of their menâs team winning silver at the 2025 IHF Menâs World Championship, the menâs and womenâs national teams of the Faroe Islands have been honoured with their own set.
The stamps recognise the dramatic rise of the Faroes onto the global handball stage and their continued development as an important handball nation.
Last year, in 2024, they burst onto the continental stage with both their menâs and womenâs teams qualifying for their debut EHF EUROs, and now the women have stepped up another level, becoming the first Faroese side to qualify for a senior IHF World Championship thanks to their aggregate Qualification Europe â Phase 2 win against Lithuania.
The two stamps feature in a set entitled âHandball in the Faroe Islandsâ, with the subtext of âFaroese professional players are now seen in top handball clubs across Europe, and they have become role models for Faroese children and youthâ and feature two cousins.
A 48 KR (6 CHF Swiss Franc) version features womenâs player Jana MittĂșn during a Faroe Islands national team match and a 25KR (3.15 CHF) edition features menâs player Elias Ellefsen ĂĄ SkipagĂžtu during the Menâs EHF EURO 2024.
Elias Ellefsen ĂĄ SkipagĂžtu was voted as the 2023 IHF Young Male Player of the Year and finished top scorer at the 2023 IHF Menâs Junior World Championship.
âIt is an honour and a huge achievement to be on a stamp in your country,â said Jana MittĂșn, who plays her club handball for Viborg HK, to ihf.info. âTherefore, it motivates me to do even better in the future.
"When I saw it, I was surprised, but it is still a great testament of Faroese handball. It shows that the sport is important, it shows that our performances are respected and it can also serve as a vehicle for handball to become even more popular in the Faroe Islands".
