Denmark ease past Bahrain for 100% record

After Bahrain were knocked out of contention for an eighth-final spot following their loss to Argentina yesterday, Denmark handed them their second defeat in two matches with a comfortable seven-goal victory (36:29) in the penultimate preliminary group C game of the 2019 IHF Men’s Youth World Championship in North Macedonia.

The result saw Denmark confirm their top spot in the group with five wins from five games and ensured there was no repeat of the Bahrain 35:31 preliminary group defeat of the Danes at the 2017 IHF Men's Youth World Championship

Denmark set up an eighth-final clash against Tunisia on Wednesday (14 August) after they eased past Asian youth champions Bahrain led by eight goals from best player of the match, left back Oliver Wosniak.

At 5:2 in the eighth minute, Bahrain coach Johan Halldor took his first time out which had directly followed four straight saves from Denmark goalkeeper Sven Bro Rughave, but his side went further behind and failed to score for a seven-minute period (13th-20th minute) as the Danes opened up a seven goal lead (12:5).

At half time it was five goals which separated the teams, thanks to a 4:0 goal run from the Bahrainis, but by the 42nd minute, Denmark led by 10 goals (28:18) and the game was over.

Four minutes later, in the 46th minute, Halldor’s frustration at his team’s lack of ability to catch, by now an eight-goal deficit (29:21), spilled over as he was given a two-minute suspension but the match was over and his side must now look towards a President’s Cup match against Serbia.

“Before the tournament we saw an opportunity to get to the last 16, but we didn’t play good and too many things are missing in our game,” said Halldor. “The results never lie, and I hope for a better performance in the President’s Cup.”
