Petro de Luanda win Angolan women’s season-opener

Petro de Luanda beat Academia do Primeiro de Agosto 28:17 (15:10) last week at the Citadel Sports Pavilion in Luanda to win the 2021 edition of Angola Women’s ‘Super Cup’ (SuperTaça Francisco de Almeida).

The match is the traditional season-opener for the Angolan women’s handball season and returned to action after it did not take place last year due to COVID-19.

The world-famous Primeiro de Agosto club featured their ‘Academia’ team, made up of mainly junior players from the club and appearing in the competition for the first time.

After an even opening, Luanda eventually pulled ahead after 20 minutes to enter the break five goals up (15:10) and by the second half, Vivaldo Eduardo’s side pushed even harder, going into the last seven minutes up by 10 (25:15), led by Vilma Nenganga, Tchieza Pemba and Natália Kamalandua.

Luanda, known as the ‘Tricolores’, have dominated the competition since it started in 2007, having now won the title 11 times.

The men’s edition of the event will see Interclub take on Primeiro do Agosto at the same venue on 22 October.
