Uruguayan side Layva secure dramatic title at the SCA Women’s Club Championship 2025

12 teams lined up at the start of the SCA Women’s Club Championship 2025, which took place between 11 and 16 May in Santiago de Chile, Chile, with one of the two Uruguayan teams participating – Layva – securing  the title, after a 20:19 win against Argentinian side Sedalo in the final.

The 12 sides represented five countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay – and were divided into four groups of three teams each.

Argentina were represented by four teams – River Plate, Dorrego, Jockey Club and Sedalo – Brazil had three teams on the card, with Pinheiros, FMO/Portugues and Torrense entering the fray, while Chile were represented by two sides – Leonas and Ovalle.

Paraguay had one team, Cerro Porteno, while Uruguay had two teams at the start, Lavya and Scuola Italiana.

After the preliminary round, only eight teams were left standing: the top two sides in each group. In Group A, Layva secured two wins in two matches, 25:16 against Leonas and 23:15 against River Plate, having the best goal difference between the four group winners, +16.

In Group B, Argentinian side Dorrego won the group, thanks to their 30:22 win against Torrense and a narrow 31:29 win against Ovalle. Group C saw Brazilian side FMO/Portugues clinch the first place, with a 24:11 win against Cerro Porteno and a 26:24 win against Jockey Club.

Finally, Group D saw a shocking result for reigning champions Pinheiros, after the Brazilian side conceded a 23:25 loss against Sedalo, with the Argentinian side doubling it down with another 25:23 win against Scuola Italiana.

In the quarter-finals, Layva dominated Ovalle, taking a 29:18 win, while Pinheiros qualified for the semi-finals thanks to their 28:27 win against FMO/Portugues, in an all-Brazilian quarter-final.

Sedalo secured the largest win in the quarter-finals, 32:17 against Jockey Club, while in the last quarter-final, River Plate eliminated Dorrego, with a 28:20 win.

Therefore, two Argentinian teams, one Brazilian side and one Uruguayan side were going to fight for the title in fiery semi-finals and the first one, opposing reigning champions Pinheiros and Argentinian side Sedalo produced an immense shock.

After taking a 15:11 lead at the break, Pinheiros dropped their level in the second half and scored only eight goals in the last 30 minutes, to concede a 23:24 loss, with Miranda Kruk scoring five goals for the Argentinian side.

The battle between Layva and River Plate produced yet another comeback, with the Uruguayan side seeing themselves down 8:11 at the break, but creating a fantastic resurgence, to clinch a 21:19 win, as Maite Pessina and Paula Eastman scored five goals each.

In the final, Layva’s goalkeeper Agustina Modernell produced a fantastic performance, being named the MVP of the competition, with a superb performance, which included a last-gasp pass to Maite Pessina, who converted the last shot of the match to secure a 20:19 for the Uruguayan side.

Therefore, Layva recorded a historic win, with five wins in five matches, as Pessina was the top scorer of the match, with six goals.

In the bronze medal match, Pinheiros delivered a 27:25 win against River Plate, to secure the last place on the podium.

River Plate’s Maria Carletti was the top scorer of the match, with 42 goals, followed by Jockey Club’s Maria Eugenia Mellano with 32 points, and Sedalo’s Karin Frelier, also with 32 points.
