Two Egyptian teams fight for African Super Cup and IHF Men’s Super Globe spot

Domestic rivals from Egypt, Zamalek SC and Al Ahly SC, will meet in the Men's African Super Cup tonight (10 September) in 6th of October near Cairo. The match will take place at Dr Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall, a 2021 IHF Men's World Championship venue.

Both clubs will contest for the trophy for the fourth straight time. While Al Ahly won their only Super Cup in 2017, Zamalek beat their domestic rivals in 2018 and 2019, to become six-time winners of the competition.

The 2020 Super Cup was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the 2021 edition, the 2019 African Champions League winners Zamalek were originally supposed to face the 2019 Men’s Africa Clubs Championship for Winners' Cup winners Étoile Sportive du Sahel from Tunisia.

However, the Tunisian club withdrew from the competition, citing sporting and administrative issues as the reason for their decision. They were replaced by the runners-up Al Ahly, who actually won the 2021 Winners' Cup last week

The Super Cup was originally supposed to take place in Morocco on 17 May but was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation and moved to Egypt.

The winners of the match, which will be played without spectators, will also book a ticket to the 2021 IHF Men's Super Globe, to be held in Saudi Arabia from 5 to 9 October. If Al Ahly win the Cup, it will secure their third IHF Men’s Super Globe appearance and first since 2015. If Zamalek win, it will be their fifth IHF Men’s Super Globe appearance and second consecutive after finishing fifth in 2019.
