The official test event for the men’s and women’s handball competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – the Japan Cup 2019 Shibuya (Women) – is ready for throw-off in Tokyo, Japan.
Four teams feature in the competition which runs from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 November at the Yoyogi National Stadium, the site of the men’s and women’s handball competitions at the Olympic Games next year and a ‘Legacy Stadium’ of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Organised by the Japan Handball Association (JHA) along with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and IHF, the competition features the women’s national teams of France, Brazil, Japan and Slovenia playing in a round-robin tournament, with the team finishing top of the table after all six games declared the winner.
All four teams will use the competition as their final warm-up ahead of the 2019 IHF Women’s World Championship in Japan which gets underway next week.
Also part of the event is the 71st Japan Men’s Handball Championship which started on Tuesday, 19 November and finishes on Sunday, 24 November and features 24 teams.
The first three days of competition (19-21 November) are being held at the Sumida Ward Gymnasium and Minato City Sports Centre before the action moves to the Yoyogi National Stadium on Friday, 22 November with the quarter-finals (10:00, 12:15, 14:30, 16:45).
The men’s cup action continues at Yoyogi on Saturday with the semi-finals (12:00 and 14:15) before the final on Sunday at 14:05, which is set to be broadcast on television and will be followed by a medal ceremony.
