Ticket to Spain up for grabs in Elgin

Four teams will take part in the 2021 Women's North American and the Caribbean Championship, which will be held in Elgin, USA from 22 to 25 August.

Organised by USA Team Handball, the championship will be played under strict COVID-19 protocols at the ‘Centre of Elgin’ recreation centre in Elgin, Illinois, a city a little more than 60 kilometres north-west of Chicago.

The four teams will play a round-robin tournament from Sunday till Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the two best sides will meet in the final, while the other two teams will face each other in a third-place encounter.

All matches will be broadcast live on the USA Team Handball YouTube page.

Only two teams have won this tournament – also referred to as NorCa Championship in the past – Cuba in 2015 and 2019 and Puerto Rico in 2017. However, title holders Cuba are not among the contenders this time, while Puerto Rico will participate in the competition alongside Mexico, Greenland and the home side USA.

All four sides have already been on the podium before: the USA were runners-up in 2015 and won bronze two years later, Mexico were runners-up in 2015, and Greenland finished third in 2019.

The winner of this year’s edition will not only claim the continental title, but also qualify for the 25th IHF Women's World Championship, which will be played in Spain from 1 to 19 December.
