The Men’s IHF Trophy Continental Phase Africa is now in full swing and five more matches were played in the Congolese capital Brazzaville on Wednesday 18 January.
At the youth (U18) competition, Nigeria claimed their third win, comfortably beating Zambia 55:16. Guinea also maintained a perfect record, albeit only after two matches, as they defeated home side Congo 31:20 after a rest day.
So Nigeria have six points, while second-placed Guinea are on four. Burundi, who had a day off on Wednesday, have two points, while Congo and Zambia still have no points.
Guinea are scheduled to play Burundi at 11:00 (local time) on Thursday and Congo meet Zambia at 15:00. Nigeria have a rest day before a crucial match against Guinea on Friday.
Guinea are the only unbeaten side at the junior (U20) event with three wins in three matches. On Wednesday, they had no problems defeating Rwanda (52:34), while Nigeria also hit the 50-goal mark to beat Zimbabwe 50:19 and the home side Congo proved too strong for Madagascar (43:19).
After three rounds of matches, Guinea take the top position with the maximum of six points, followed by Congo, Nigeria and Rwanda, who are level on four points. In turn, Madagascar and Zimbabwe are yet to earn their maiden points at the competition.
The two outsiders actually meet at 9:00 on Thursday, while Rwanda are scheduled to face Nigeria at 13:00 and hosts Congo will try to challenge Guinea at 17:00.
