Thailand prepares to host Asian women’s beach handball championships

The eighth edition of the AHF Women’s Asian Beach Handball Championship will get underway in Bangkok, Thailand this Monday (25 April), before concluding five days later (Saturday 30 April).

Just three teams will compete in the championship – hosts Thailand, alongside Vietnam and India. They will play each other twice in a round-robin league featuring six games. The team sitting top of the league after the games have completed will take the title and also secure a ticket to the 2022 World Games in the USA.

The top two teams will also qualify for the 2022 IHF Women’s Beach Handball World Championship in Greece this summer.

The previous edition of the championship was held in Weihai City, PR of China in June 2019 with the host nation winning their first ever championship trophy, breaking Thailand’s hold on the title. Thailand had won the last three Asian Championships, but could only finish fourth in 2019, with 2022 opponents Vietnam in second place.

Running alongside the senior championship on the same dates at the same venue will be the second edition of the AHF Women’s Asian Youth Beach Handball Championship.

Hong Kong, Thailand and India will take part in the same format as the senior championship, with all of them having already secured a place at the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth Beach Handball World Championships in Greece in June.

The first edition of the championship took place in Pattaya, Thailand in August 2016, with China taking the title, followed by Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong.
