Taubaté triumph at SCAHC Men’s Club Championship

Brazilian team HC Taubaté won the South and Central America Handball Confederation (SCAHC) Men’s Club Championship, claiming four straight victories at the tournament and securing a berth at the 2022 IHF Men’s Super Globe.

Nine teams from five South American nations – Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay – took part in the event, which was held between 24 and 28 May at SAG Villa Ballester in Buenos Aires.

The participants were divided into three groups, and their winners along with the best second-placed team progressed to the semi-final, while the other sides continued to play for places 5 to 9.

Brazil’s Taubaté and Pinheiros as well as Argentina’s San Fernando and SAG Ballester reached the semi-finals, and on Friday, Taubaté defeated San Fernando 27:21, while the 2021 champions Pinheiros were too strong for home team Ballester, claiming a 28:23 win.

In an all-Brazilian final on Saturday, Pinheiros won the first half 13:12, but Taubaté made a strong comeback after the restart to secure a 27:20 victory.

The third-place match was also a national derby, and San Fernando beat fellow Argentinian side Ballester 28:25.

Notably, San Fernando’s Federico Fernandez became the top scorer of the competition with a tally of 27 goals in four matches.
