Second day brings new exciting clashes in Groups B, C, G and H

The second day of the 2023 IHF Men's Junior World Championship will see great handball action across the courts in Germany and Greece. Co-hosts Germany will face unbeaten Tunisia, while Greece want to make their fans smile again against Cuba.

Iceland, Brazil, Portugal, Serbia and Egypt will try to expand their winning streak at the flagship competition.

Group B

  • 15:30 CEST Libya vs Algeria

In an all-African duel, both teams will try to get their hands on the first win at the competition. Libya, having qualified for the first time since 2009, will try to get back to Algeria for the defeat at the 2022 CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship.

Conversely, Algeria have more recent experience at the IHF Men's Junior World Championship, as they finished 14th in 2017. On top of that, they finished second at the 2022 CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship, proving their strength on the African continent.

Meddahi Rabah Racim's seven goals helped Algeria to have a half-time lead and keep close to Tunisia, who made a turnaround in the 45th minute of the game. Libya were not that lucky, having a tough opponent at the start - Germany. With a shot efficiency below 40 per cent and without fastbreaks, Libya scored only 14 goals.

  • 18:00 CEST Germany vs Tunisia

The only European team in the group seek the second straight win at home after beating Libya in the first round. The M19 EHF EURO 2021 champions have a strong squad of players already gaining experience in the Bundesliga, and it was showing from the first minute.

Tunisia aim to surprise their opponents with a well-known style of play that brought them to third place at the 2022 CAHB Junior Handball Championship. They are also coming to the game after victory on the first day, beating Algeria 27:22.

The African team opened Germany/Greece 2023 on a good side with an outstanding performance of twin brothers Ben Salem - line player Yassine netted a total of eight, and left wing Amine added another six, getting their revenge against Algeria.

Their opponents, the Germans, had an easy task against Libya at the competition's kickoff. While the whole team made an effort, Tim Freihöfer and Florian Kranzmann both scored seven times, being the team's top scorer.

Group C

  • 13:15 CEST Costa Rica vs Portugal

The debutant of the competition, Costa Rica will have a hard time against well-structured Portugal, a runner-up of the M20 EHF EURO 2022. Costa Rica had a hard path to the IHF Men's Junior Handball Championship, finishing fourth at the 2022 South and Central American Men's Junior Handball Championship with few heavy losses.

Costa Rica will not remember the start of the competition by good, losing 17:38 to Brazil. However, they can be proud of Jared Joahn Campos Ruiz. The goalkeeper had a 38 per cent saving efficiency.

Even though Portugal are missing some key players at the flagship competition at Germany/Greece 2023, like brothers Mota da Costa and Gabriel Calvacanti, they hope to repeat their former success.

Carlos Martingo's team had an easy outing against Kuwait, deciding the game already in the first half of the match, with André Sousa and hummel Player of the Match Joao Gomes being unstoppable with 5/5 from the game. The success would be a lot harder to reach without a 50 per cent saving efficiency of Diogo Marques.

  • 20:15 CEST Brazil vs Kuwait

Brazil proved why they are called the powerhouse of the South and Central American Men's Junior Handball Championship, beating Costa Rica 17:38. Brazilian players will have the right test against Portugal later in the group, but they need to be fully concentrated not to underestimate Kuwait.

Led by right wing Michael Da Silva Quintino, who had an 11-goal outing against Costa Rica, Brazil will try different tactics ahead of the last group match.

Kuwait are back in the competition after ten years, and they will need to show more if they want to top up their latest placement (20th in 2013). In the opening match on day 1, the inexperienced Kuwait side could not keep up with Portugal.

The bright side for the team was Ahmad Aljuwaieed, with 10 saves at a 32 per cent saving efficiency, with all 15 out of 16 players scoring at least once, including both goalkeepers.

Group G

  • 12:15 CEST (13:15 EEST) Iceland vs Chile

Without a rest day, the second day in Rentis Sport Hall 'Melina Merkouri' in Athens will be opened with the clash between Iceland and Chile. Iceland opened the competition with a win over Morocco. However, they still need to upgrade their attacking skills.

Icelandic players need to step up a gear against Chile if they want to reach their primary goal and boost their confidence, as their main players had more misses than goals.

On the other side of the court, the South American team will have a hard time against Iceland after a 13:41 defeat against Serbia on the first day. The Chilean side are slightly younger than their opponents, with a 20.06 age average, and despite being a regular at the competition at the junior level, Aitor Echaburu's team will have a hard time repeating the country's top placement, finishing 20th on three occasions if they do not find a new force.

"The first result was not what we expected, but for us, it was a nice experience. It is our first world championship, and we are very happy. In the next games, we want to get the best result we can. We know it will be difficult games, but we will try," said Chilean centre back Sebastian Puelma for handball.org.gr.

  • 19:15 CEST (20:15 EEST) Morocco vs Serbia

The fifth team from the 2022 African Men's Junior Championship have a challenging task in their group. However, they have shown a fighting spirit against Iceland in the opening match. Despite losing 15:17, Morocco was a tough nut to crack, especially defensive wise, with Youssef El Mouaddar between the posts.

After a game against Iceland, another European team will seek a second straight win on the Moroccan account - Serbia. Serbian players did not break a sweat in the first game against Chile, easily scoring over 40 while conceding only 13.

Before entering the all-European clash on Friday, the duel for the first place in the group, Serbia seek to extend the winning euphoria, just like at the last four IHF Men's Junior Handball Championships.

"Morocco had a good game against Iceland which means we need to have full respect. They have a strong defence, and we need to be careful. We know that a win would give us a place in the main round, and we will do everything to get it," said Serbian head coach Đorđe Teodorović.

Group H

  • 14:30 CEST (15:30 EEST) Saudi Arabia vs Egypt

The Egyptian side are following in the footsteps of their senior team. After winning the gold medal at the CAHB African Men's Junior Championship, Egypt started the Germany/Greece 2023 campaign on a good foot. Mohamed Elalfy's team were convincing against Cuba, easily scoring from all positions.

Considering their background, Egypt will not have a problem against Saudi Arabia which relies only on players from domestic clubs. Having a breakthrough at their fourth IHF Men's Junior World Championship, Saudi Arabia is aware they cannott look up for much against Egypt.

The fourth-placed team from the 2022 Asian Junior Championship were defeated 22:31 against Greece on the first day of the competition, putting Ahmed Alabdullah and Hussain Furaij in the spotlight.

  • 17:00 CEST (18:00 EEST) Greece vs Cuba

Cuba are the second debutant at Germany/Greece 2023, and the lack of experience was showing in their first game against Egypt. If the co-hosts Greece want to win against Cuba at the competition, they need to stop Maiko Antonio Vazques and Samuel Alejandro Cordies Castillo. The duo netted 19 out of 28 Cuban goals, or 68 per cent in total.

Greece aim to claim another victory in front of their fans after a 31:22 win against Saudi Arabia. Even though the win seemed easy, Saudi Arabia was pushing hard in the first half, allowing Greece only to make a break in the last three minutes of the game.

"These games for us, with a young team with guys who don't have performances of this level, are experiences that will help us," said Cuba head coach Alexis Luis Michael for the handball.org.gr.

One of the key players in Greek rows, Achilleas Toskas for handball.org.gr said fans helped them to win in the first game and invited more people to the venues: "We play next game against Cuba, we will give everything to qualify for the main round, which was the original goal for us. We want to show the same level. The crowd helped us a lot; it's an important factor so we're expecting even more people in the following matches."
