Romania storm past Senegal to emphatic win

Romania delivered one of their most convincing performances at Germany/Netherlands 2025, cruising past Senegal with ease to secure a commanding 37:17 victory.

Main Round, Group III
Romania vs Senegal 37:17 (21:7)

Both teams began the match nervously, with missed shots and poor decisions dominating the opening minutes. The scoreboard stayed at 0:0 until the fourth minute, when Romania finally broke the deadlock, and from that moment on, their dominance took full control.

Within ten minutes, Romania surged to a 6:0 lead, while Senegal managed only three shots on goal, clearly reflecting their struggles in attack. Senegal’s second goal came in the 15th minute through Marie Fall, and although they showed slight improvement towards the end of the half, they finished with only seven goals — each scored by a different player.

Romania capitalized on Senegal’s mistakes with ease, while Bianca Curmenț once again provided a strong presence between the posts. She ended the first half with an impressive 45% save rate, helping her team to a +14 advantage at the break (21:7).

Nothing changed after the restart despite coach Yacine Messaoudi’s attempts to energize his team. Senegal continued to struggle, unable to raise their attacking efficiency above 20% for the first 20 minutes of the half. Their turnovers piled up, fueling Romania’s relentless counterattacks and extending the gap to 20 goals when Sorina Grozav netted her fifth of the match.

Senegal improved slightly in the closing minutes, finishing on 29% efficiency, but that only matched their lowest scoring output of the competition, the same 17 goals they recorded in their 17:26 loss to Hungary. Romania, meanwhile, closed the game in style with 11 different scorers, led by Grozav’s nine goals, sealing a decisive victory.

With this heavy defeat, Senegal remain bottom of the table with zero points, their only win coming against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the group phase. Romania celebrate their third victory at Germany/Netherlands 2025. While their quarter-final hopes are effectively over, a top-10 finish remains within reach, an improvement after placing 12th and 13th in the previous two World Championships. To achieve it, they must beat Switzerland on the final main round day and hope for favourable results from other groups.
