Reigning champions Brazil dominate debutants USA to open campaign with a big win

Brazil threw off their title-defending campaign at the IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship with a clear win over the United States of America, 2:0 (9:2; 7:0), as the debutants could not stop the reigning champions.

GROUP A
Brazil vs USA 2:0 (9:2; 7:0)

Reigning champions Brazil were favoured against the USA in the opener of the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship in Egypt, as the American team was just assembled together over the last months, in an effort to become competitive and count on this stage.

With only two test matches against Egypt under their belt before the start of the competition, the USA looked like they had some aces upon their sleeve and controlled the first two minutes of the first set, as Chayse Wolf converted a penalty after 44 seconds, with the USA taking the lead.

Brazil had some issues with their passing, misplacing some of them in the first minutes, but when their defence started going stronger and stronger, with some key saves from their goalkeepers, the USA had no answer.

The South American powerhouse, the reigning champions, then went on for a scoring spree for the next nine minutes and 16 seconds, as the MVP of the previous edition, Guilherme Lourenco, scored three points, while Anderson Ferreira added four more points, as Brazil had a 9:0 run to secure the first set.

The second half had more or less the same recipe, with Brazil’s stunning defence setting them up for fantastic fast breaks, which saw the South American side jump to a 5:0 lead after seven minutes and a half, as USA failed to really get anything going in attack, with a great display in defence and from the goalkeepers from Brazil.

Eventually, with Lourenco scoring six points and Ferreira adding another five, Brazil clinched the second set in dominating fashion, preventing USA to score for the last 19 minutes and 16 seconds of the match, with Brazil clinching a dominating 2:0 win (9:2; 7:0) against the debutants.

In a group where they will face another two debutants in the next two matches, Japan and France, Brazil look favoured to secure the first place and create a path for themselves to secure a place in the semi-finals, while the USA need to go back to the drawing board and save something in the next two matches.
