Quarter-final berths ready to be awarded at Slovenia 2022

After the Netherlands and Sweden progressed to the quarter-finals on Sunday evening from Group I, another two sides can secure safe passage to the knock-out phase of the 23rd IHF Women’s Junior (U20) World Championship on Monday.

Provided that Angola and Germany win their games in the Golovec Arena in Celje, they will also clinch the much-coveted berths from Group III of the main round, while in Group IV, reigning champions Hungary eye to extend their winning streak against one of the surprise packages of the competition, Switzerland.

Eight teams in two groups of the President’s Cup will also take centre stage on Monday, with Romania, Poland and Austria heavily favoured licking their wounds after failing to progress to the main round.

Main Round Group III

  • Angola vs Slovenia (18:30 CEST, Golovec Arena, Celje)
  • Germany vs Czech Republic (20:30 CEST, Golovec Arena, Celje)

With Angola and Germany starting with two points, Slovenia’s only chance of progressing to the quarter-finals is winning both games against the African side and the Czech Republic. However, on the back of a painful defeat against Germany, 21:27, Slovenia must heavily improve on both sides of the ball when they face Angola, one of the most pleasant surprises in the competition.

On the other hand, Germany will have to make do without centre back Lucy Jörgens, their top scorer in the competition with 18 goals, as she suffered a tournament-ending shoulder injury in the win against Slovenia. After winning Group F in the preliminary round, Germany must recalibrate when they face the Czech Republic, who secured a seven-goal win against Romania and progressed to the main round.

Main Round Group IV

  • Croatia vs Egypt (18:30 CEST, Zlatorog Arena, Celje)
  • Hungary vs Switzerland (20:30 CEST, Zlatorog Arena, Celje)

Hungary will look to preserve their amazing 11-game winning streak at the IHF Women’s Junior World Championship when they face Switzerland in the last game of the day in the Zlatorog Arena in Celje. After having already won against Egypt, the reigning champions could make another step towards securing a quarter-final berth, as they have the best attack in the competition after the preliminary round, scoring 115 goals in three matches.

However, Switzerland come in hot, riding a two-game winning streak, after securing a superb 22:21 win against Croatia. The game will likely decide one of the qualifiers in the group, as both sides start the main round with two points.

Croatia started the tournament with two wins, but their last-gasp loss against Switzerland really hampered their chances of progression to the knock-out phase at Slovenia 2022. There will be no room for mistakes as only two wins can make Croatia qualify for the next phase. On the other hand, qualifying for the top 16 already is Egypt’s best result in the competition, but the African side, who lost by 19 goals against Hungary, but won against Poland, are once again underdogs against a more experienced side.

President's Cup Group III

  • Romania vs Mexico (14.30 CEST, Zlatorog Arena, Celje)
  • Chile vs Lithuania (16.30 CEST, Zlatorog Arena, Celje)

The Romanian team may feel unlucky – they opened the championship with two wins, but it was not enough to reach the main round following a 25:32 defeat against the Czech Republic. However, now Romania have an opportunity to redeem themselves in the President's Cup. They start it with two points and hope to add some more to their tally in the encounter against Mexico, who lost all three Group F games in the previous stage.

Chile was among the teams who defeated Mexico, 31:28 in a close fight, but that win did not help them to advance to the main round. Now, the South American team's goal is to do well in the President's Cup. Before Slovenia 2022, they participated in the IHF Women's Junior World Championship twice, finishing 22th and 20th. Now they would like to take a higher position, and a win against Lithuania, who earned no points in the group stage, is a must.

President's Cup Group IV

  • Poland vs Kazakhstan (14.30 CEST, Golovec Arena, Celje)
  • Austria vs USA (16.30 CEST, Golovec Arena, Celje)

Poland's defeat against Egypt was one of the biggest surprises during the group stage of the current tournament, and that setback denied the European team a main round spot. With two points, they have to continue in the President's Cup, and on Monday they will be viewed as favourites against Kazakhstan. The Kazakhs have lost all three matches at Slovenia 2022 so far with an aggregate goal difference -64 – only the Islamic Republic of Iran and the USA did worse.

The second European team in Group IV is Austria, who were also frustrated by the results of the previous round. Kristina Dramac became the top scorer in the group stage with 30 goals, and her team earned four points, but Switzerland's surprising win against Croatia on Saturday sent their Alpine neighbours to the President's Cup.

Now they are seen as big favourites against the USA, who have struggled at this level so far. The United States team lost all three matches with an aggregate goal difference -87, and they failed to score more than 14 goals in a single match.
