Al-Ahly secured their fourth consecutive trophy and the sixth in history in the CAHB African Men’s Handball Super Cup, while Angolan side Petro Atletico clinched their 20th trophy in the CAHB African Women’s Handball Super Cup, with the two Final Fours taking place in Cairo, Egypt, on 12 and 13 May.
Four sides took part in both competitions, with both Egyptian powerhouses – Al-Ahly and Zamalek – entering the men’s competition and facing in the first semi-final. Once again, it was Al-Ahly which got the best of their rivals, taking a 31:27 win, after they were leading 15:12 at the break.
The second semi-final saw Espérance de Tunis take on Moroccan side Montada and after a 13:13 draw at half-time, Espérance produced a flawless second half, to secure a 31:24 win.
Boosted by the presence of Ali Zein and Stanislav Kasparek in their squad, and a 44.4% saving efficiency from Mohamed Homayed, Al-Ahly left nothing to chance in the final, where they thoroughly dominated Espérance, with an absolutely outstanding defensive performance.
After a 11:8 lead at the break, Al-Ahly went on to a 24:15 win, taking their fourth consecutive title and their sixth in history, being the third most decorated side in the CAHB African Men’s Handball Super Cup, after MC Alger (nine titles) and Zamalek (seven titles).
In the bronze medal match, Zamalek dominated Montada, 41:20.
In the CAHB African Women’s Handball Super Cup, Angola’s winning streak – dating back to 1999 – continued, as Petro Atletico secured their 20th title, with commanding wins in the two matches.
In the semi-finals, the Angolan side took a 42:14 win over AS Otoho, after leading at the break, 25:4, and they faced Al-Ahly in the final, after a hard-fought battle with Tunisian side AS Sahel, where the Egyptian team eventually came unscathed, 26:24.
