Eight teams have been confirmed for the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship, which will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 16 to 21 September 2024.
Two teams from Europe, Asia and South and Central America, plus one each from Africa and the North America and Caribbean will be vying for the coveted trophy, as several powerhouses return, while other sides make their debut.
The reigning champions of the IHF Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship, Brazil, as well as the reigning champions of the World and European Wheelchair Handball Championship Six-a-Side, Portugal, will be at the start.
Hosts Egypt, which finished second at the 2022 IHF Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship, will return to this edition of the competition. France, an up and coming team in wheelchair handball, are also part of the line-up, as well as two Asian representatives, Japan and India. Joining Brazil from the South and Central America are Chile, which, alongside India, have featured at the 2022 IHF Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship.
A team which will make its debut at the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship are the United States of America, which have been awarded a wild card, with teams from five continents now taking part in the competition for the first time in history.
The draw for the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship will take place on Thursday, 18 July, at 11:00 CEST, in the IHF Head Office in Basel, Switzerland.
The eight teams will feature in two groups of four teams each, and they have been divided into four pots, according to seeding and the pre-condition that only one team per continent can be in the same preliminary round group.
- Pot 1: Egypt, Brazil
- Pot 2: India, Japan
- Pot 3: France, Portugal
- Pot 4: Chile, United States of America
One team from 2 and 3 will be drawn into each of the two preliminary groups, starting with teams in pot 3 being drawn into row 3, followed by pot 2 into row 2. Once pot 3 and 2 have been drawn, Egypt, who are in pot 1 and row 1, then have the right as hosts to assign themselves to a group of their choice. After Egypt have chosen their group, Brazil, the remaining team in pot 1, will be allocated to the other group.
Subsequently, the teams from pot 4 will be allocated to the groups depending on the choice of the organiser. As Chile cannot play in the same group as Brazil (same continent), Chile will automatically be allocated to the group of Egypt. Consequently, the team from the USA will be allocated to the group of Brazil.
