Pots revealed and draw date set for the 2024 IHF Men's Club World Championship in Egypt
16 Aug. 2024

The world handball flagship club competition, the IHF Men’s Super Globe, will undergo a makeover starting from 2024 onwards, with a rebrand helping cement its status as the most exciting men’s handball club competition in the world.
The 17th edition of the club world handball flagship competition will be known as the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, and will take place in Egypt, between 27 September and 3 October, with nine teams at the start. All the matches are scheduled to be played in the New Administrative Capital Hall, already used at the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship.
The nine teams have already secured their spot for the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship. First of all, there are reigning champions SC Magdeburg – which won the last three editions (2021, 2022 and 2023) – and hosts Al-Ahly. Another regular in this competition is featured, with FC Barcelona, winners of the EHF Champions League Men, making their seventh consecutive appearance and their tenth in history, being the most decorated team in the competition, with five gold and two silver medals.
The African representative will be Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek, which secured their ticket by finishing second in the 2024 African Handball Super Cup, conceding the title to rivals Al-Ahly, which were already qualified as hosts.
Saudi side Khaleej, which finished sixth in the previous two editions, are due to represent Asia, after securing the title at the 2024 Asian Club League Championship, with a 35:33 extra-time win in the final against Qatari side Al-Arabi.
The winners of the 2024 South and Central American Men's Club Handball Championship, Brazilian side Handebol Taubaté, will make their return after a one-year hiatus, after winning 29:27 against EC Pinheiros in the final of the continental competition.
The California Eagles will make their debut in the competition, after winning the NACHC Qualifier, while the Oceania representatives will be Sydney Uni, returning after a one-year hiatus, after securing the title in the Australian Club Championships and Oceania Qualifier
The last available spot in the nine-team line-up was allocated as a wild card and the IHF Executive Committee has decided to award this wild card to Hungarian powerhouse Veszprém HC, marking the team’s return to the competition for the first time since 2015, when they finished second.
The draw for the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship will take place on Wednesday, in New Alamein City, Egypt, at 19:00 EEST (18:00 CEST), with the nine teams being divided into three groups of three teams each for the preliminary round. It will be streamed live on the IHF Competitions YouTube channel.
The teams have been already been seeded into three separate pots, with no teams representing the same continent being able to play in the same group. Teams from Pot 3 will be drawn first, followed by the teams from Pot 1. Al-Ahly, as the hosts, will choose their group, with the remaining two teams in the Pot 2 being drawn next.
The three European teams will be seeded in the first pot and will not play on the first day of the competition.
The winner of each group will progress to the semi-finals, where they will be joined by the best second-placed team in the three groups. The remaining five sides will feature in the Placement Matches.
