Pettersson scores 26 goals, as Magdeburg fly past the University of Queensland
09 Nov. 2023

SC Magdeburg wasted no time in securing their second win in a row and a semi-finals berths at the 2023 IHF Men’s Super Globe, with a dominating performance against the University of Queensland, 57:14.
It set the record for the largest number of goals scored and the largest gap in the history of the IHF Men’s Super Globe, but also the record for the number of goals scored by a single player, Daniel Pettersson, who finished the match with 26 goals.

SC Magdeburg (GER) vs University of Queensland (AUS) 57:14 (28:7)
Reigning champions SC Magdeburg were overwhelming favourites on paper against the University of Queensland, as they needed at least a draw against the Australian debutants to make the semi-finals for the third consecutive edition of the IHF Men’s Super Globe.
But there was no question about the winner of the match, with Magdeburg cruising in style to their second win in this edition and to their 12th win in 13 matches at the IHF Men’s Super Globe, as their superiority was evident.
Everything stemmed to the inability of Queensland to break down Magdeburg’s defence, as goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez, who is at his second edition of the IHF Men’s Super Globe, after featuring for SL Benfica in 2022, finished the first half with nine saves and a 60% saving efficiency.
Those saves were translated into fast breaks, as well as the 20 turnovers made by UQ, with Magdeburg boasting an 83% scoring efficiency after 30 minutes, with all the 11 fast breaks converted in the first half. It was no surprise, therefore, that the largest gap at the halfway point in any match in the history of the IHF Men’s Super Globe was achieved, 28:7.
Swedish right wing Daniel Pettersson was absolutely fantastic in this regard, wasting none of the chances he had in the first 35 minutes, as the gap kept growing. In fact, Pettersson set a new record for the number of goals scored by a player in a single match at the IHF Men’s Super Globe, 26, beating the previous record co-held by Hassan Kaddah and Ali Saleh, of 16 goals.
But Magdeburg did not stop there and broke two new records: the largest number of goals scored by a team in a match at the IHF Men’s Super Globe – previously held by Barcelona, 50, against Club Ministros in 2012 – and the largest gap in history, also set by Barca against Ministros, 32 goals.
Eventually, Magdeburg sealed a 57:14 win, as Pettersson, the hummel Player of the Match, was doubled by left wing Lukas Mertens, who scored 12 goals, despite UQ trying their best, on both sides of the ball.
SC Magdeburg made it in style to the semi-finals of the IHF Men’s Super Globe for the third time in a row, as the reigning champions will face Industria Kielce, in a rematch of the EHF Champions League Men final from the last season, where the German side clinched the title.
On the other hand, the University of Queensland head to the Placement Matches 9–12, where they are due to meet the San Francisco CalHeat, with the winner securing their maiden win in history at the IHF Men’s Super Globe.
