OVB Beach Girls and BHT Petra Plock take European beach cup titles

BHT Petra Plock and OVB Beach Girls have won the men’s and women’s EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup 2022 titles, respectively as the eighth edition of the event completed in Porto Santo, Portugal, on Sunday (23 October).

With their 2-0 win (20:14, 25:22) against Salgótarjáni Strandépítök BHC in the final, Plock became the first Polish side to take the title.

On their way to gold, they lost just once in nine games, and the title gave them extra cause to celebrate their club’s 10th anniversary. Bartosz Wojdak top-scored for them in the gold medal match with 13 points.

In the women’s final Hungarian side OVB Beach Girls defeated Danish side HEI Dame Beach Handball – complete with Denmark internationals comprising half of their 10-player squad – via a shoot-out 8:5 (2-1).

OVB’s Amina Kazeem top-scored in the final with 18 points, the 17-year-old left wing a rising star in Hungarian beach handball, having represented her country at the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth Beach Handball World Championship in Greece, where they finished fourth.

Reigning men’s champions Fomento Deporte CBMP Ciudad de Malaga finished fourth, while 2021 women’s champions GRD Leça - Love Tiles could only finish 10th.

2016 IHF Women’s Beach Handball World Championship winner with Spain, Maria Asuncion Batista Portero, was the top scorer and named MVP in the women’s competition, playing for GEA A.M. Team Almeria.

Croatia men’s captain, current IHF Men’s Beach Handball World Championship and World Games title-holder Ivan Juric was named best defender, playing for Fomento Deporte CBMP Ciudad de Malaga.

The previous seven EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup events had seen six different countries take the honours, with teams from Spain winning a total of six titles (three men’s and three women’s), Russian clubs taking three men’s titles and Croatia one, while Hungarian clubs have won two women’s titles, alongside a solitary women’s title going to Norway and Portugal alike.
