Nine teams learn their fate in luxurious setting at the draw for the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship

The 17th edition of the club world handball flagship competition, formerly the IHF Men’s Super Globe, will be known as the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, and will take place in Egypt, between 27 September and 3 October, with nine teams at the start. All the matches are scheduled to be played in the New Administrative Capital Hall, already used at the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship.

On Wednesday, 21 August, in a luxurious setting in the New Alamein City in Egypt, in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, the Egypt Minister of Youth and Sports, and Dr Hassan Moustafa, the IHF President, the nine participating teams learnt their fate, with the draw for the preliminary round of the competition taking place.

With the competition only a few weeks ahead and all the participating clubs confirmed in July, the final preparations for the competition are on their way and the teams have now learnt their opponents in the group phase.

The draw was conducted by two Egypt stars, Ahmed Elahmar, currently playing for Zamalek SC, and Ibrahim Elmasry, Al-Ahly’s defensive specialist, with Al-Ahly, as hosts, having the right to choose their group, after the teams from Pot 3 and Pot 1 were drawn into their respective groups.

The reigning champions, SC Magdeburg, which won the last three editions of the competition, will feature in Group C, alongside Saudi side Khaleej Club, and debutants California Eagles, the winners of the  NACHC Qualifier.

Al-Ahly chose to play in Group B, alongside the most decorated team in the history of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, FC Barcelona, and Australian side Sydney Uni, which will feature for the 11th time in the competition.

In Group A, Hungarian champions, Veszprém HC, which received a wild-card for this edition of the competition, will play against Egyptian side Zamalek SC, and Brazilian side Handebol Taubaté, the winners of the 2024 South and Central American Men's Club Handball Championship.

The preliminary round will take place in a round robin system, between 27 and 29 September, with the teams from Pot 1 – FC Barcelona, SC Magdeburg and Veszprem HC – playing on 28 and 29 September.

The two semi-finals will be played on 1 October, while the final and the bronze medal match are set to be played on 3 October.
