Nine decades of excellence: Romanian Handball Federation celebrates 90 years with star-studded gala in Bucharest

The Romanian Handball Federation (FRH) marked a landmark milestone on Tuesday evening, as a glittering gala in Bucharest brought together the legends, icons and current stars of Romanian handball to celebrate 90 years of one of the sport's most storied national traditions.

The event, held in the presence of distinguished personalities from Romanian and international sport, honoured approximately 100 former and current athletes and coaches who have contributed to building the remarkable legacy of handball in Romania, one which includes World Championship gold medals, Olympic podium finishes, and performances that have inspired generations of players across the globe.

A legacy written in gold

Romania's place in the history of world handball is beyond dispute. The Romanian men's national team claimed the IHF Men's World Championship title on four occasions - in 1961, 1964, 1970 and 1974 - establishing themselves as one of the dominant forces in the sport throughout that era. The women's national team added further glory by winning the second edition of the IHF Women's World Championship in 1962, cementing Romania's status as a true powerhouse on both sides of the game.

At the Olympic Games, Romania's men's team etched their names into history with a silver medal in 1976 and bronze medals in 1972, 1980 and 1984, a consistency of excellence at the world's greatest sporting stage that few nations have matched. More recently, the women's national team claimed silver at the 2005 IHF Women's World Championship, bronze at the 2015 IHF Women's World Championship and silver at the 2010 Women's EHF EURO, underlining that Romanian handball's ability to compete at the highest level has never truly faded.

A night of recognition

Tuesday's gala was a night of deep emotion and well-deserved recognition. Among those honoured were Women's World Champions Aurora Bran Alexandrescu, Aurora Niculescu Leonte, Elena Rado Jianu and Maria Scheip Constantinescu, alongside Men's World Champions Constantin Tudosie, Gheorghe Goran, Marin Dan, Mihail Marinescu and Radu Voina, names that resonate through the history of international handball.

Olympic medallists Simion Schobel, Cezar Drăgăniță, Nicolae Munteanu, Alexandru Buligan, Vasile Stângă, Dumitru Berbece and Adrian Simion were also recognised, as were the members of the Women's World Championship silver-medal winning squad in 2005, bronze medal-winning squad of 2015 and the EHF EURO 2010 silver medallists, including Steluța Luca, Aurelia Brădeanu, Cristina Vărzaru, Mihaela Tivadar, Narcisa Lecușanu, Roxana Gatzel, Simona Gogîrlă, Valentina Ardean Elisei, Ada Moldovan, Adriana Nechita, Adina Meiroșu, Oana Manea, Magdalena Paraschiv, Ana Maria Tănasie, Ionica Munteanu, Luciana Popescu and Crina Pintea.

The contribution of coaches was equally celebrated, with Gheorghe Tadici, Aurelian Roșca, Simona Maior Pașca, Elena Drăgănescu, Gavril Kozma and Mircea Anton among those recognised for their pivotal roles in guiding Romanian national teams to historic results.

FRH President Constantin Din captured the spirit of the evening with a heartfelt reflection on the meaning of the anniversary.

"Ninety years have passed since the Romanian Handball Federation was founded, ninety immense years in which Romanian handball has been at a high level. Our duty now is to continue and to try to make our handball better and better. It was our duty to mark this anniversary. This is a moment of gratitude towards those who built Romanian handball," he said.

One of the most powerful and emotional addresses of the evening came from IHF Executive Committee Member and former Romanian international Narcisa Lecușanu, who spoke both as a proud Romanian and as a representative of the global handball family.

"It is an immense honour to be here today, in a moment when time seems to stand still to celebrate nine decades of history, passion and national pride. Ninety years of the Romanian Handball Federation is not just a number on a calendar, it is a chronicle of Romanian excellence, written with sweat, tears of joy and an unyielding character," she said.

Visibly moved as she addressed the room filled with the legends who shaped her career, Lecușanu paid tribute to the coaches and leaders who had guided her both at the national team and during the golden era of Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea.

"I look around this room and feel overwhelmed with gratitude. I see here the people who shaped not only my career, but my character. You were not just coaches - you were the architects of my dreams. At Vâlcea and at the national team, I learned that the impossible is only a state of mind, and under the national colours I understood what it means to carry the hopes of an entire nation on your shoulders. Everything I achieved on the court is down to the trust you placed in us and the iron discipline through which you taught us to love great performance. Thank you for believing in us," she added.

Speaking on behalf of the International Handball Federation, Lecușanu conveyed the deep respect that the global handball community holds for Romania's contribution to the sport.

"Today, I have the privilege of wearing two hats. I speak from my heart as a Romanian, but I also bring with me the respectful greetings of the International Handball Federation, conveyed by President Dr Hassan Moustafa. At the global level, Romania is regarded as an inexhaustible reservoir of talent and a historic force. The international community recognises our immense contribution to the evolution of this game, let us not forget that one of the greatest theorists of world handball is the Romanian Ioan Kunst Ghermanescu. We are respected for those world titles, both in men's and women's handball, for our successes at youth level, and for our ability to remain in the world elite. The IHF's message is one of admiration: world handball needs a strong Romania, because our fighting spirit inspires the entire world," she said.

Closing her address with a call to action for the future, Lecușanu underlined the importance of investing in the next generation.

"Handball is perhaps Romania's most precious ambassador. But for this 90-year history to continue for another century of success, we need a solid partnership. We need infrastructure and investment in young players to keep pace with the native talent of our children. Let us give today's young handball players the chance to become tomorrow's heroes - just as we were given our chance," she concluded.

The IHF congratulates the Romanian Handball Federation on this remarkable anniversary and joins the entire handball family in celebrating 90 years of passion, dedication and excellence.
