Nigeria youth team book ticket to the final in Accra

On Wednesday 21 February, the IHF Trophy Men Zone 3 Africa in Accra, Ghana continued with four matches, including two at the youth tournament and just as many at the junior competition.

In the youth (U17) event, Nigeria booked their ticket to the final following their second straight win, 31:26 against home side Ghana. In the other encounter, Benin proved too strong for Togo, taking a 40:24 victory.

So after two matches, Nigeria have the maximum of four points, and they have beaten both Ghana and Benin, who are level on two points, so the Nigerians are certain to reach the final. On Thursday 22 February, they face the last-placed Benin in their final group match at 13:00 (local time), while Benin and Ghana will meet in a direct duel for the other ticket to the final at 17:00.

In Group A of the junior (U19) competition, Ghana beat Togo 49:18, while Ivory Coast had a rest day. Ghana have three points after two games and are through to the semi-final, while Ivory Coast (two points) and Togo (zero points) will meet at 15:00 on Thursday.

In Group B, 16 goals from Ibrahim Yarou lifted Benin to a 49:29 win against Liberia, so the Liberians, who suffered their second straight defeat, are certain to finish bottom of the group and will proceed to the fifth-place match. Meanwhile Benin and Nigeria, who are currently tied on two points, are through to the semi-final, and they will fight for the top position in the group at 19:00 on Thursday.
